Abstract

Background and Objective: Spodoptera frugiperda is a major pest in corn plants. Damage caused by Spodoptera frugiperda can reach up to 60%. One method of controlling Spodoptera frugiperda pests that can be used is by using the botanical pesticide Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) from the extract of cashew fruit skins. Anacardic acid in CNSL contains repellent and antifeedant compounds. This study aimed to determine the effect of CNSL extract on the behavior and mortality of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. Materials and Methods: The study used a Completely Randomized Design with 5 treatments and 4 replications, namely control, CNSL 5, CNSL 10, CNSL 15 and CNSL 20%. Observation of larval responses including movement behavior, larval morphology and feeding behavior was also studied. Mortality observation was conducted every 24 hrs for 3 days. Larval mortality data were statistically analyzed using One-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc tests. Results: The use of CNSL affected the behavior of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. In the control treatment (0%), larvae showed no change in behavior, remaining active in movement and feeding. In treatments 5, 10 and 15%, several hours after application (HAA), larvae exhibited behavioral changes, such as slowing movement and avoiding food sources. The CNSL extract also significantly affected the mortality of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae, causing 100% mortality at a CNSL concentration of 20%. Conclusion: Cashew nut shell extract alters Spodoptera frugiperda larval behavior, slowing movement and causing food avoidance, while a 20% concentration leads to 100% mortality. © 2024 Vien Sartika Dewi et al.
