Abstract

The aim of this research was to examine students' vocabulary level by analysing their academic essay writing. This study examined 13 academic essays written by English department students in one Indonesian university. All data were analysed through the on-line Lextutor analysis tool, developed by Tom Cobb from Canada. The findings of the study revealed that students used different ranges of vocabulary in their academic writing. These included basic words, academic lexis and terminologies. However, the findings indicated that students were mostly using basic words in their writing. The implication was that students had to be familiar with higher level academic words, so that they would be able to engage and understand academic texts written in English. © 2017 WIETE.
