Abstract

This paper intended to reveal the use of expressions by teachers in the class to maintain their politeness. Data for this paper were based on the recordings of the teachers' teaching process in English schools in Makassar, Indonesia. The teaching processes of English classes were observed, recorded, transcribed, and analysed to get a picture about the politeness strategies they used. Findings showed that although teachers had dominant power in the class due to their superior position over students, building solidarity between students and teachers was necessary. This could be clearly observed from politeness strategies employed by teachers such as greetings, thanks, apologies, requests, and compliments. Teachers also used address terms to refer to students namely by using names and pronouns.
