Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing English Language Teaching (ELT) by enhancing critical thinking skills in learners. Critical thinking is crucial for the competent use of a foreign language, allowing students to analyze, synthesize information, evaluate language use, apply it to real life, and reflect on it. AI can improve thinking skills in ELT by providing personalized environments, real-time feedback, tailored challenges, and interactivity. AI-empowered applications, such as language learning apps and virtual classrooms, can build critical skills and enhance language proficiency simultaneously. Teachers can design learning tasks that encourage reflection, inquiry, and discussion, promoting critical thinking and identifying gaps in understanding complex ideas. AI-based tools can be implemented in ways that minimize infringement on students' education and personal liberties, ensuring the teacher's functions and responsibilities are preserved. © 2026 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
