Abstract

This study presents the design and the implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based automated plant irrigation system, which not only performs automatic watering but also enables real-time monitoring of plant conditions. Monitoring is conducted through an Android application that provides information on soil moisture and ambient temperature. The data is collected by using a Soil Moisture Sensor and a DS18B20 temperature sensor, integrated with a microcontroller that processes and transmits the data to the application. The system is designed to facilitate both irrigation and plant condition monitoring automatically. Performance evaluation has been carried out by using three methods: Black Box Testing, Sensor Testing, and Responsiveness Testing. Black Box Testing has confirmed that all the components and the functionalities operate as intended. Sensor Testing has demonstrated an average error of 1.4% for the Soil Moisture Sensor under various soil conditions and an average error of 0.75% for the DS18B20 temperature sensor. Responsiveness Testing has showed that the water pump has activated with an average duration of 1.3 seconds. Minor discrepancies in sensor data have been attributed to unstable connections and variations in soil media. The results confirm the system’s reliability and effectiveness for automated irrigation and real-time environmental monitoring.
