2025 Shifting Power Dynamics in International Relations: From Unipolar Hegemony to Multipolarity Book chapter Cited by 0 Quartile

Abstract

This chapter analyzes the shift in the global order from U.S. led unipolar dominance to a progressively intricate multipolar framework. This analysis utilizes historical examination, theoretical models, and case studies to investigate how emerging powers, regional alliances, and the Global South are transforming power dynamics via strategic adaptation, geoeconomic tools, and normative challenges. Special emphasis is placed on the constraints of U.S. global supremacy in the 21st century, the emergence of digital sovereignty, and the reconfiguration of international institutions. The chapter delineates prospective scenarios for global governance and provides pragmatic policy proposals to foster cooperative multipolarity. It concludes that while multipolarity creates new obstacles, it also offers opportunity to cultivate a more pluralistic, sustainable, and egalitarian global order through inclusive diplomacy and adaptable governance initiatives. © 2026 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
